Eight Furniture Highlights From One Of Europe’s Most Respected Design Galleries

The ultimate talent scout, Rossana Orlandi, has run one of Europe's most important design galleries for the past 18 years. Known as Spazio Rossana Orlandi, it is here in this former tie factory in Milan where the magic operates. Always ready to take a chance on new talents, Orlandi has an eye for spotting promising young designers, having taken a risk on the likes of Piet Hein Eek, Maarten Baas and Nacho Carbonell before they became famous, helping to propel them onto the world stage. The greats such as Piero Lissoni, Alessandro Mendini, Paola Navone, Patricia Urquiola, Gaetano Pesce and Nendo have also exhibited in her gallery. Somewhat of a godmother of Italian design, she treats her protégés as her own children and needs to have an immediate personal connection with the designers she works with. If she likes the work but not the person, she won't start. We take a look at some of the most exciting products that have passed through the doors of her gallery.

Mandalaki Halo Lamp

image

Employing the least amount of materials possible, the super-skinny floor lamp features a dichroic filter designed and manufactured by the Milan-based studio that divides the pure luminous flux of the LED into an infinite spectrum of colors.

Sé Below the Heavens Collection

The sculptural, serene range of chairs, benches, sofas, tables and lighting with names stemming from Greek mythology by Ini Archibong comes in various celestial hues and reveals the tension between delicacy and strength.

Guglielmo Poletti Equilibrium Table

image

Continuing the Equilibrium series emphasizing tension to turn minimal gestures into balanced designs, it has a monolithic presence with weighted cylindrical legs in contrast to an ultrathin 6-mm top that tests the limits of aluminum, whose strength is guaranteed by a stainless steel cable and expanding central bar.

Ecopixel Alex Chaise Longue

image

Designed by the late Alessandro Mendini, the daybed with geometrical, folded forms transforms 100 % recycled and recyclable polyethylene into a work of pointillism through a multi-colored pixel-based approach and an innovative pressurized production technique.

Germans Ermics Colorscape Mirror

image

Reflective and glistening, it shimmers in the light, showing a palette of colors merging into one another as when day turns into night.

Mete Lala Chair

image

Refined and minimal, the chair by Nika Zupanc is offered in a variety of colors and is influenced by the basic lines of a simple school chair, now modified with a metal structure to frame the upholstered seat and backrest.

Matthew McCormick Mila Chandelier

image

Experimental and poetic, the pendant is a study of balance between two pure and simple volumes with a hand-blown glass orb sitting at the base of an oval metal frame with entirely invisible technology. Available in varying lengths, it may be suspended individually or as a group.

Enrico Marone Cinzano Pino Table

image

For indoor or outdoor use, it is handcrafted in marble, glass, steel and charred, stabilized recovered pine wood. The top covered in solar panels printed with a wood slice motif powers a battery that can supply energy to the table's LED lights or to one's gadgets via a built-in multi-zone plug and USB ports.

This Platform’s April Furniture Sales Beat Black Friday Numbers—By a Lot

For furniture retailers, the widespread shutdowns caused by COVID-19 had initially proven disastrous. The first weeks of the pandemic saw the category suffer steep, double-digit declines as the ability to browse offline disappeared. But business didn't dry up entirely, as some of that displaced demand shifted online.

Now, new April data shows just how quickly shopping for furniture online has become the new normal. According to a press release from home furnishings–focused e-commerce platform Blueport Commerce, furniture retailers on the platform (which includes members of the Furniture Today Top 100) saw their online sales increase by an average of 306% over April 2019. In fact, total sales across the platform were 81% greater than what was observed last November, a busy sales period for the furniture industry which included Black Friday, but not Cyber Monday, in 2019.

Just as total sales increased in April, so did the average order size for furniture retailers. The value of the average sale across the platform increased by 27% to $1,210. Top-selling categories included sofas, living room sets, and dining sets. That suggests these sales bumps weren't simply the result of customers rushing to furnish their new home offices, but a potentially more sustainable shift. Based on the evidence, it would seem that some furniture retailers have had enough time to adapt their sales and marketing strategies to fit a new, fully-online world.

"Turning to digital channels to reach their shoppers, furniture retailers amped up digital marketing and their social media presence," Blueport founder and CEO Carl Prindle tells AD PRO. "They deployed chat and video conferencing technologies to enable their salespeople to consult with shoppers. They also used their in-house delivery capabilities to tune delivery methods, ensuring safe deliveries and putting shoppers at ease."

Subsequently, a number of retailers generated enough online sales to keep pace with or at least close the gap on their pre-pandemic projections. "Retailers generated a meaningful portion of the brick-and-mortar revenue they had anticipated for April, despite all of their stores being closed," Prindle says. "Some retailers actually grew total sales relative to last April, when they had their stores open."

The data here is only a small snapshot of what's happening in the retail sector, and furniture retailers would obviously prefer to return to a world where they can also make sales in stores. But as brands have augmented their sales efforts and customers have adjusted their expectations, there's reason to believe that the furniture industry may make it through the pandemic more or less intact.

"We had actually planned on partnering with them before COVID started and we were going to do an in-store event to sign up and get their swab on the spot," explained Randilynn. "But right now people aren't coming into stores and sticking swabs in their mouths. But we can still do something."

They moved the campaign to social media and are getting a great response.

In terms of their business, Randilynn and Jason are doing virtual shopping trips for customers. They refer to them as "pre-purchase appointments" acknowledging how important it is to see, and sit on furniture, in person before making a purchase. Which is something that just isn't possible right now.

A roller coaster ride for furniture shop

BUTTERWORTH: In a roller coaster ride, small and medium enterprises that spent all day cleaning and sanitising their shops, found themselves locking their doors again.

The state government announced the movement control order (MCO) would remain until May 13, which is different from the easing of restrictions under the conditional MCO starting today as announced by the Federal Government last week.

Though disappointed by the state's decision that was announced at 2.30pm yesterday, furniture shop managing director Datuk Ng Hooi Lai, 68, said he would comply.

"I was looking forward to resuming business. We sanitised everything, " he said.

"I wish the state and federal authorities could be more coordinated, but I am willing to comply for the safety of customers and employees, "

Ng said he was happy when the prime minister announced the conditional MCO last Friday.

"Now we must wait till May 13. We closed our branches since March 18.

"We've had hardly any income. I had to fork out more than RM100,000 for rental and my workers' salaries.

"To generate sales during the MCO, we turned to online platforms to sell our furniture, " he said at his shop in Seberang Jaya yesterday.

Ng confessed he was a bit worried about reopening his shops because he was not sure how to do it.

"The SOP given is not clear and we are not sure how to manage our orders, " he said.

"There are some customers who want to buy furniture but we put some orders on hold as we are not sure of the guidelines, " he added.

He said typically, the furniture business would peak just before the Hari Raya celebrations and in the previous years, his company could generate a turnover of RM1mil.

When finally allowed to reopen, Ng said he planned to allow only five customers in at any one time.

"Customers will have to register themselves and provide us with their names, contact numbers, addresses, purpose and the time of entry, " he said.

"All customers will be scanned for their temperature and they have to practise social distancing.

"Our sales promoters will also wear gloves and masks at all times, " he added.

The company's accounts clerk, Ooi Hooi Thin, said she had only been going to the office for a few hours once a week since March 18.

"I am happy that I can finally go back to work but at the same time, I'm worried as the virus spread has not been contained yet nationally.

"As I am an accounts clerk, I feel relieved as I do not need to deal directly with clients.

"I will put on my mask and use hand sanitiser frequently to keep myself and others safe, " the 29-year-old said.

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr 28, 2020--

The "Furniture Global Market Report 2020-30: Covid 19 Impact and Recovery" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The global furniture market is expected to decline from $731.6 billion in 2019 to $705.7 billion in 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -3.6%. Furniture manufacturing companies are integrating technology with furniture products to offer customers innovative and functional products. Technological advancements are helping furniture companies to offer customers convenience to address their day to day needs. The best deals on outdoor patio furniture as Memorial Day approaches you’re still stuck at home

The coronavirus pandemic has kept people stuck inside their homes for two months, and while some states are relaxing lockdown rules, it's a good bet you'll spend a lot of time at home this summer.

As Memorial Day approaches and the weather improves, the temptation to get outside increases by the day. Spending time on the patio or deck to get some fresh air or sun is a smart middle ground between leaving the house and being locked inside.

Upgrading the backyard, patio or deck is a fun way to kill time outside, too. Kohl's, Amazon, Home Depot, ManhattanHomeDesign and Wayfair are great places to find new outdoor furniture to renew your backyard's aesthetic.

Here are some of the better deals right now on outdoor furniture for the patio or deck:

    Dining Sets

Change the scenery for family dinners by taking them outside. Get a new dining set for the deck, like this 5-piece Hudson set that's 10% off at ManhattanHomeDesign, or this 7-piece set at Wayfair, which is holding outdoor furniture sales as summer approaches.

    Grill

Keep the entire family dinner outdoors by cooking it outside, too. Get a new grill, like this Weber propane grill or this Char-Griller charcoal grill, for a fresh start to your outdoor cooking.

    Chairs

After finishing up a satisfying meal, you'll want to find somewhere comfortable to digest. Get new chairs to settle down in, like this Sonoma swivel chair that's almost $200 off at Kohl's, this Tangula lounge chair from Amazon, or this teardrop patio chair that's nearly 25% off at Wayfair.

    Hammock

Settling into a hammock with a good book might do the trick to forget about the coronavirus pandemic for a bit. There are plenty to choose from, like this Algoma set that's $120 off at Kohl's or this Vivere model at Home Depot.

    Tent

When the sun gets really fierce, it'd be smart to have something blocking it. Find a canopy tent, like this Eurmax model at Amazon, or an umbrella, like this 10-foot umbrella that's 50% off at Wayfair, that'll cover your dining table or deck.

    Bar

Bars across New Jersey are closed, so create the experience in your backyard. Get this 3-piece pub set, this 10-piece pub glass set and these Carolina Cottage pub stools, all from Kohl's and all on discount. Other options are on MHD, Amazon and Home Depot.
